Guided tours

The museum offers a range of guided tours, allowing various groups, families, organisations and individuals to explore our collections.

Short guided tours are available in the Magrittes’ apartment, or as an introduction to abstract art; as well as in-depth guided tours covering the entire surrealist or abstract collection.

For conservation reasons, group sizes are limited. However, it is possible to form several groups that will take part in the tour in rotation.

Guided tours are typically available in Dutch, French and English, but please feel free to contact us with enquiries regarding other languages.

Our team of guides has also developed a range of themed tours, from a focus on the female artists in our collection and their stories, to a tour dedicated to the unconscious and occult sources of inspiration for some artists. An overview of the thematic tours we currently offer can be found here.

Themed tours

The Subconscious & the Occult

The Parisian Surrealists were convinced of the importance of the subconscious and developed various techniques to stimulate their subconscious imagination. Magritte had his own unique approach as a visual philosopher to distilling mystery from the everyday. What is less well known is that many abstract artists were also influenced and inspired by occultism and spirituality. In this guided tour, we will explore the occult and subconscious sources of inspiration in early 20th-century art.

Where are the women?

“Why have there been no great women artists?” This question, posed in 1971 by the American art historian Linda Nochlin, caused a huge stir in the art world at the time. With this question, Nochlin highlights the lack of visibility and recognition that women have faced throughout art history, as well as the obstacles they encounter during their careers. Today, interest in these issues remains as relevant as ever, and the number of female artists in Western museum collections, as well as their recognition in art history education, remains insufficient. What is the situation at the René Magritte & Abstract Art Museum in Jette?

Abstract Approaches

Abstract art is still often subject to misconceptions, ranging from ‘my child could do that too’ to ‘inaccessible’ or ‘only for experts’. Nothing could be further from the truth. This guided tour offers an introduction to the various approaches to abstract art: from technological developments and scientific contexts, through a love of music, to occult spirituality and colonial experiences as sources of inspiration.

The Colonial Crossroads (from autumn 2026)

Explore the ambiguity in the Surrealists’ attitude towards colonialism: on the one hand, an explicit stance against French imperialism; on the other, an exoticising view of the indigenous ‘other’ as a romanticised, mythical savage. Continue by uncovering the crucial role of the Belgian Congo in the artistic development of painters such as Floris Jespers, Jean Milo, Luc Peire, and Renée Demeester; and the problematic relationship between Belgium and its colony in the cultural sphere.
